8 hand-picked oils to make your tummy smile.

  1. PEPPERMINT: The great relaxer – Your digestive system is a long tube of muscle controlled by alternating the relaxing and tightening of sphincter muscles. When an area is too tightly constricted, food/poo backs up, pressure builds until the dam breaks. All that stretching, stopping, and starting like an accordion makes your belly ache, gurgle, and cramp. Peppermint is ideal for IRRITABLE BOWELS because it relaxes those tight spots like it’s getting the kinks out of your “garden hose”.
  2. FENNEL: Do you ever eat Indian food? Look next to the cash register and you’ll see a bowl of Fennel and Anise seeds. Indians have known for 1000 years that these seeds are great for digestion. I mentioned that peppermint relaxes the tight spots in your intestines, but Fennel helps moderate the sequence of motion of the smooth muscles in your intestines that pushes along the food/poo. This makes Fennel ideal for intestinal spasms and Gastrointestinal (GI) disturbances that are common in chronic COLITIS. It’s common in the elderly for GI muscles to be too weak to push the food along, fennel helps there too. Fennel also reduces intestinal GAS and the pain and CRAMPS associated with laxatives. Fennel can help to stop ulcers before they start or soothe existing ulcers.
  3. LEMONGRASS: Half of us have a stubborn little bacteria named H. Pylori living in our stomachs. Most don’t have symptoms but many people get a dull burning PAIN between meals and at night, eventually, they’ll get painful ULCERS, or even cancer (2%). This H. Pylori bacteria that’s causing this is VERY hard to kill and antibiotic resistance is common. Thankfully, Lemongrass is H.Pylori Kryptonite. If this bug is the source of your troubles, Lemongrass can wipe it out.
  4. JUNIPER is known as “bitter” because of its bitter flavor. Bitters improve digestion because eating them causes saliva, digestive enzymes, and stomach acid secretions to increase. By ramping up your own system to do its job juniper helps with HEARTBURN and INDIGESTION, an upset stomach, gassiness, BLOATING, and loss of appetite.
  5. GINGER: Stops NAUSEA. Period. Remember when grandma gave you Ginger Ale to settle your stomach, ginger essential oil is infinitely more powerful.
  6. ANISE: Utility player. Anti-ulcer, Anti-nausea just by smelling it or in the diffuser, it’s a LAXATIVE, stops spasms, and is pain-relieving especially right after a meal. It’s also antimicrobial, but not as strong as lemongrass
  7. PATCHOULI: High in patchouli alcohol which is one of the active ingredients in ginger. Also reduces intestinal muscle contractions similar to what Peppermint does. Fewer contractions = less constipation.
  8. TARRAGON: traditionally used to assist with intestinal PARASITES and has potential in the fight against DIABETES. Appears to improve our insulin response

I have a medical study to back up each of these claims. Let me know if you want to see a study or if you have questions.

I always use the capsule, but my kids can’t swallow one so I put 2 drops in their OJ and then tell them to slam it before they can taste it. There is evidence that massaging on the abdomen can help with belly aches and constipation. Also diffusing it helps with nausea. I use about half of a veggie capsule. I don’t use a carrier with this blend because the oils are all pretty soothing. If you’re just trying it out for the first time, try 2-3 drops with a carrier oil like coconut or grapeseed oil. Adjust from there.
