VITAMIN D, the D stands for Daddy, actually it’s D3 Cholecalciferol, but who talks like that. More appropriately, it stands for bone Density because Vitamin D’s primary role is to regulate calcium, but it also reduces inflammation, and helps prevent certain cancers, heart disease, and depression. In this case, we’re focused on immune function.
How can D save your life? When they studied “that nasty CoVD virus” from 2019, the data showed that vitamin D levels directly correlated to the severity of the disease and hospitalizations. They looked at the charts of 400 people who were so sick they had to be hospitalized. Not a single one of them had optimal D levels. Here’s the kicker… almost all of them were deficient in Vitamin D. ‘Deficient’ is below 20 ng/mL. Doctors recommend at least 30 ng/mL but that’s not enough; you should aim for 50 ng/mL.
Meh, you’re probably fine, right? Doubtful. 42% of adults in the USA are full-blown deficient in vitamin D. The groups with the lowest Vitamin D are the EXACT SAME GROUPS who were hit hardest by “that nasty virus”…
- Older adults (+65 years), 63% are deficient
- African Americans, 82% are deficient
- Hispanics, 62% are deficient.
So why weren’t our leaders telling us all to take Vitamin D? Why did they close beaches and parks where we could’ve made Vitamin D from the sun? I zip my lips on that, but the lesson is clear… We have to take care of ourselves.
The best source of vitamin D is the sun, but most of us aren’t habitual sunbathers, so supplements are necessary to achieve optimal benefits. Keep in mind that vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, so take it together with a fatty meal and/or Omega-3 fatty acids. In almost all cases, however, the sun is not enough, especially for people with dark skin living in northern latitudes. If this is you, you NEED a vitamin D supplement to achieve blood serum levels of at least 50 ng/mL. One study showed you’re 5 times more likely to get hospital infections after surgery if your D level is 30 ng/mL compared to 50 ng/mL. So unless you eat heaps of egg yolks, fish, mushrooms, and Vit D fortified milk, we ALL need a vitamin D supplement. You’ll need 100mcg per day total (from all sources). Super Vitamin D is my favorite; it has 50mcg so you’re halfway there already (link below).
Dental Bill Bonus…Don’t forget, teeth are bones too. Lately, people are chattering about Fluoride in the water to get a 25% reduction in cavities, but studies found that D3 supplements cut the number of cavities by 50%! Can’t we all just get along… and take Vitamin D in the sun while we drink egg yolks and sardines? Okay, that got weird. My bad.
Most supplements make Vit D from lamb wool, fish oil, or make it in a lab. Young Living’s Super Vitamin D is plant-based, from Lichen, which is the most bioavailable and effective form of vitamin D for humans. Plus it’s chewable, so you’ll start to break it down and absorb it in your mouth, then fully break it down in
